Kristy has all of the accomplishments of a champion, yet the one thing that makes her truly special is how much she is respected and loved by her competitors and teammates. A leader in practice and in competition, Kristy led her University of Georgia Bulldogs to three straight NCAA Championships.

1999 NCAAs--Champion in the 200y breast (2:07.66), shattering the NCAA and U.S. Open record of 2:08.90 set by Penny Heyns of Nebraska (2/17/96), the American record of 2:09.06 set by Mary Ellen Blanchard of Dynamo (3/22/89) and her own NCAA meet record of 2:09.14 (3/21/98)...champion in the 100y breast (59.25)...six-time All-American...also placed third in the 200y IM with a personal best and Georgia record-setting 1:58.14...aided the Lady Bulldog relays with finishes of second (200y medley ), third (400y medley) and fourth (200y free)...CSCAA NCAA women’s swimmer of the year.

1999--Successfully defended her SEC titles in both the 100y and 200y breaststroke and placed second in the 200y IM...honored as co-recipient of the SEC Commissioner’s Trophy for high-point honors...1999 Intersport Network and J.C. 1998 NCAAs--Champion in 100-yard breast (59.05), breaking her own American record as well as the NCAA, NCAA meet and U.S. Open record set by Arizona State's Beata Kaszuba in 1995 (59.71)...champion in 200-yard breast (2.09.14), breaking NCAA meet record previously held by Southern Cal's Kristine Quance...third in 200-yard IM (1:58.49)...swam fastest breast stroke splits in NCAA history as part of Georgia's 200 and 400-yard medley relays, with a 26.86 and 58.71 respectivley...set American and U.S. O pen record in 400-yard medley relay.

1998 SECs--Rewrote her American record in the 100-yard breast with a 1:00.04 mark in the prelims and placed first in the finals with a 1:00.17...earned her second SEC title of the meet with a conference and Georgia school record-breaking mark of 2:10.29 in the 200-yard breast...also edited the Georgia record in the 200-yard IM, placing second with a 1:59.63...swam on the Lady Bulldog's top relay teams at the conference meets.

1998--Earned a pair of World Championship titles while competing for Team USA at the FINA World Championships in Perth, Australia -- gold in the 100-meter breast with a time of 1:08.42, becoming the first American female to win a title in the 100 breast, and gold in the 4x100-meter medley relay (4:01.93), swimming the third-fastest breaststroke relay split in history (1:07.20) while aiding the team to an American record...also swam to a silver-medal finish in the 200-meter breast at World Championships, dropping nearly three seconds off her personal best with a time of 2:26.19...broke American record in 100-yard breast at the Georgia Invitational in December with a mark of 1:00.14 -- the previous record, a 1:00.32 was set by Gretchen Hegener of Minnesota at the 1997 NCAA Championships, a race in which Kowal finished second...two-time national champion at the 1998 Summer Nationals in Clovis, Calif., winning the 100- and 200-meter breast while placing seventh in the 200-meter IM...qualified for participation in the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney, Australia, by virtue of those performances...Academic All-American.

1997--Established new Lady Bulldog records in the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 IM, earning each of those marks at NCAA Championships...four-time All-American and one-time Honorable Mention All-American, placing second in the 100 breast (1:00.38), third in the 200 breast (2:11.08), third in the 400 medley relay, second in the 200 medley relay and ninth in the 200 IM (2:00.12)...although placing second in the 100 breast, Kowal's mark of 1:00.38 surpassed the previous American record held by Mary Ellen Blanchard (1989, Dynamo)...set SEC records with titles in the 100 breast (1:01.33), 200 breast (2:12.35) and 400 medley relay (3:38.20)...also claimed a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:40.32) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:02.26) at SECs...finished the dual meet season with 11 first-place finishes to her credit, five in the 100 breast, four in the 200 breast and two in the 200 IM...reinforced the Lady Bulldog medley relays...100m breast champion at U.S. Nationals and placed second in the 200m breast with the third fastest American time ever...posted the second-fastest breast split ever by an American female in the 4x100 medley relay while competing at the Pan Pacific Championships in Fukuoka, Japan...placed third in the 100m breast and seventh in the 200m breast at Pan Pacs...slated to compete at the FINA World Championships in Perth, Australia (Jan. 12-18, 1998)...Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
